SOME BASIC CONCEPT OF CHEMISTRY

INTRODUCTION OF CHEMISTRY

The branch of science wich deals with the study of composition, properties and structures of matter and the changes which the matter undergoes under different conditions and laws which govern these changes.

It also plays an important role in our daily life.

IMPORTANCE AND SCOPE OF CHEMISTRY

All the matter in the universe is made up of tiny smallest particles called atoms or molecules.

It is difficult today to imagine our life without chemistry.

Main applications of chemistry

1. Chemistry has helped in agriculture, food, medicine, warfare, transportation, computers and in our everyday life.

Chemistry for meeting our basic needs and necessities of life
Provided chemical fertilizers, improved variety of insectisides, fugicides and pesticides to increase the yield of crops and fruits.

To use of preservatives has helped to keep food materials for longer periods.

Chemistry has also helped for better health and sanitation, the epidemics such as chlora, corona, smallpox, plague,have now become things of past.

Discovery of anasthetics has made surgical operations more and more successful.

Give us a varity of drugs such as:-
       
                Antipyretics = to lower body temprature in high fever.

                Analgesics = to relieve pain.

                Tranquilizers = for treatment of stress and metal diseases.
                Antimicrobials = To cure infections.
               Antimalarials = To treat malaria.
               Antibiotics = Penicillin, Amoxycillin,Streptomycin.

Antifertility drugs:-

World wide used for birth control methods.

For large number of LIFE SAVING DRUGS:-

  1. Cisplatin and taxol = for cancer therapy.
  2. AZT(Azidothymidine) = used for helping AIDS victims are latest contribution of chemistry in medicine.

CHEMISTRY FOR OUR COMPFORTS, PLEASURE AND LUXRIES:-

GIVEN US BUILDING MATERIALS,synthetic fibres and variety of articles of domestic use.

Chemical industries manufacturing fertilizers,acids,alkalies, salts, dyes, polymers,drugs soaps, detergents,metals,alloys and other organic and inorganic chemicals.

CHEMISTRY GIVING US NEW MATERIALS:

Given us as materials such as superconducting creamics,conducting polymers,optical fibres,microalloys, carbon fibres etc.

CHEMISTRY IN WAR:

  1. INCREASES THE STIKING POWER.
  2. Responsible for the discovery of highly explosive substances such as dyamine,TNT(trinitrotoluene), nitroglycerine,poisonous gases such as MUSTARD GAS, PHOSGENE,LEWISITE.
  3. Atom bomb, hydrogen bomb.

FUTURE GOALS AND CHALLENGES FOR CHEMISTRY:-

CFCs =  responsible for ozone depletion in stratosphere.

Environmental problems, managementof green house gases(like methane, carbon di oxide).

THE TYPES OF ELEMENTS

 Using electronic    configuration as the criterion ,we ordinarily recognise four general type of elements ; The inert gas elements  THe representative elements  The transition elements  The inner transition elements. "The classification of these elements into these groups is dependent on the extent to which the s,p,d and f orbitals are filled".
